A TALK about the life of preacher and hymn-writer Charles Wesley will be held in Bishop Auckland next weekend.

Professor Dick Watson, former professor of English at Durham University, will give a lecture in celebration of the 300th anniversary of Wesley's birth.

The talk will look at how the writer - who penned more than 6,000 hymns in his lifetime, including Love Divine and Hark The Herald Angels Sing - drew on scripture as inspiration.

Professor Watson said: "Charles Wesley is famous for his use of the Bible and this lecture will explore ways in which he transforms biblical texts into expressions of his most pressing and spiritual needs."

The talk, called If the Bible were lost...Charles Wesley's use of Holy Scripture, will be at Bishop Auckland Methodist Church on Saturday.

The free event, which has been arranged by the Wesley Historical Society North-East branch, starts at 2pm for half an hour of singing Wesley's hymns. The talk starts at 2.30pm.
