Identical twins Paul and Craig Shepherd have swapped their rugby boots for dance shoes in an attempt to raise funds for a North-East hospice.

Friends of the 22-year-old practical jokers decided to get their own back by entering them in Hartlepool Hospice's Strictly Come Dancing contest.

But the Billingham Rugby Club first team players said what started out as a bit of a laugh has now turned more serious, as they are having the time of their lives in rehearsals.

The brothers, from the Low Grange area of Billingham, Teesside, have been paired with successful dancers from the Carol Hammond School of Dance, in Hartlepool, and are practising for an average of six hours a week.

They will then be among eight couples to compete for the title in the grand finals at Hartlepool Borough Hall on Saturday, April 28.

Last year's event raised more than £4,500 for the hospice.

"Everybody thought they would get their own back on us by entering us in this competition, because we are the jokers of the club," said Paul.

"But the cards have turned because we are actually enjoying it. We are learning to dance the tango, waltz, jive and salsa and it's good fun. You have to be fit because you have to move a lot.

"We have both got two left feet and we are still a bit embarrassed, but it's a laugh. I think we have a chance on the night, but we will have to wait and see."
