Newton Aycliffe, Rugby Club, Sunderland 3rd XV 29 , Newton Aycliffe 12

NEWTON Aycliffe Rugby Club visited Durham Junior League leaders Sunderland on a bright sunny day for their latest match.

A number of the first choice forwards were missing, but Aycliffe were able to field a strong set of backs.

It was apparent from the outset that Sunderland, with their large and experienced pack, would dominate the forward battle and so Aycliffe's backs would have to survive on a minority of possession. When they did get the ball, Gareth Parsonage and Drew Gibson both looked menacing.

In defence, Aycliffe's tackling, particularly by David Gibson and Paul Ellis was of a high standard.

The pressure finally told when Sunderland scored a try, which was converted.

The half-time score was 7-0 to Sunderland, but Aycliffe were still hopeful that their greater pace would see them to victory.

Injury depleted the Aycliffe backs early in the second half and, despite good displays by the replacements, including Peter Howlett, who showed good potential despite his inexperience, the cutting edge was lost. The pressure from the Sunderland forwards increased as they were able to substitute fresh legs for those that were beginning to tire.

Four further tries were added, but Aycliffe refused to give up and, in fact, began to dominate in the line-outs.

A number of attacks were launched in the final minutes, but Aycliffe were unable to score.

The final result was 29-0 to Sunderland.

On April 14, Aycliffe visit Darlington Mowden Park 3rd XV in a friendly (3pm). Newton Aycliffe would like to thank all their sponsors including Specsavers Opticians.
