JUDGES have been out and about in a village which hopes to win a second gold award in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

More than 15 locations in Appleton Wiske, near Northallerton, were inspected by Michael and Lovaine Irving.

Entries included a sensory bed at Smithy Green, which is maintained by the Junior Bloomers, formed last year to encourage young people to take an interest in their community. The youngsters have already taken part in a competition to design an environmentally friendly garden.

"Appleton in Bloom has been running for a number of years and has played a great part in building cohesion across the community," said its secretary, Simon Golding.

"The village is hoping to match the gold award it won in the competition last year."
