RESIDENTS living in Middlesbrough are being asked to take part in a survey to find out their opinions on the town's becks.

The Environment Agency wants to know what people like about the beck areas, how they use them and if they are aware of any causes of flooding.

Following laws introduced after the floods of 2000, the Environment Agency is responsible for managing flood risks from large rivers, such as the Tees and Esk, and also smaller streams.

The becks affected in Middlesbrough are Middlebeck, Ormesby, Marton West and Newham.

Survey co-ordinator Mike McNulty said: "By asking questions about the becks, we hope to understand more about how valued they are, and the amount they are used by the communities that live around them."

The information will contribute to a plan which is being developed with Middlesbrough Council.

It will consider how the becks could be improved for the benefit of everyone in the town.

About 1,000 people in the areas will be asked to take part in the survey through door-to-door interviews.

It is expected to begin in mid-April, and interviews are being carried out by Yarm-based research company RSUK.
