TEENAGE sweethearts Andrew and Evelyn Rhynas celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary yesterday.

And they had a lot more to throw a party for, because both turn 90 within a few weeks of each other and their 70th wedding anniversary.

The two met in Aberdeen and were among the first residents of Boulmer Court, in Chester-le-Street, when the sheltered housing opened 20 years ago.

Mr Rhynas said: "We met each other at a dance when we were 18 - and that was it. We have had many happy years together. We have always helped each other. I think that's the reason we are here today. Everyone says it must be love."

Mrs Rhynas said: "Andrew is easy going. There is no squabbling. I would never have thought we would still be together when we met more than 70 years ago."

Mr Rhynas worked at George Angus, in Cramlington, before he retired. The couple have a daughter, Margaret, 69, who lives in Chester-le-Street, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
