VOLUNTEERS are needed for a project to help clean up their community.
The award-winning West Rainton Green Group has organised a litter-picking event this weekend - part of a long-running campaign to improve the village, which lies between Durham city and Houghton-le-Spring.
The group, which is made up of village residents, runs projects to enhance the appearance of the village and increase awareness of environmental issues through an educational programme for young people.
The litter-picking event, which is supported by the national charity Community Service Volunteers and Morrisons supermarkets, will take place on Saturday, from 10.30am to 1pm, when areas of the village will be cleaned.
Richard Hockin, who is co-ordinating the project, wants to see as many people as possible come along to help.
"Clearing litter has a dramatic effect on the appearance of the village and is tremendously satisfying.
"We are hoping to see a good turnout."
Volunteers are asked to meet at Jubilee Hall, in North Street, West Rainton. Litter-picking sticks, gloves and bags will be provided.
Anyone interested in taking part can call Mr Hockin on 0191-584-3110.
