This is a new world, lightly oaked chardonnay with a light golden colour and a nose full of citrus fruit flavours.

It's a medium-bodied well-balanced wine of 14 per cent alcohol. The taste is of peaches and tropical fruit with vanilla background and a butterscotch finish. This is a wine that will keep for another three years if stored properly. It's recommended with poultry and with smoked salmon. It should keep for three years.

The wine comes from the coastal region of South Africa, the heartland of the country's wine production. The grapes grow in weathered granite soil on the slopes of the Paarl mountains. Sixty per cent of the grapes were fermented in French oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel making for an interesting taste. This bottle came from Morrisons priced at £5.99.

In the same store there's a chardonnay to compare at a pound higher price from Australia. I particularly liked this one - Makers Table 2005. It's full of melon and peach flavours in a fresh full-flavoured middle palate. The 13 1/2 per cent alcohol content is just right for the wine to go with rich fish dishes.
