CHILDREN'S author Terry Deary yesterday helped a community launch its new play park, created after four years fundraising and other work.

The author of Horrible Histories was joined by Tom Hall, four, to perform the honours at the multi-purpose play area at Cookson Place, in South Moor, Stanley.

Cookson Place Residents' Association treasurer Mark Reed said: "The association was set up four years ago, with aim of generating a bit of community spirit.

"One of the things it identified that the community needed was somewhere for children to play in a safe environment.

"It has been a hard slog, with sponsored runs and fundraising events, but it has been worth it."

The park, which has a variety of play equipment, including a sand pit for toddlers and an adventure playground, is monitored by CCTV cameras.

Hundreds of people enjoyed a day of activities to mark the launch yesterday, including birds of prey, bouncy castle, tombola and face painting.

North Durham MP Kevan Jones was also present for the opening.
