PUB owners are hoping to tempt a different class of customer through their doors with a planned al fresco-style cafe.

The Wobbly Goblin is an unsightly, heavy bricked bar in Stockton town centre. But proprietor Dino Paleschi and his wife, Caroline, are planning to change the look of the building and take advantage of the outdoor space.

They have submitted their proposals to Stockton Borough Council for planning approval.

Mr Paleschi wrote in a report to council planners: "In terms of any social effect, this scheme would be to encourage the use of what would be a unique addition of a secured garden area.

"Al fresco dining and coffeeshop facilities are to be incorporated, and the positive ambience this would create can only be of benefit to the immediate surroundings, and Stockton High Street as a whole."

Ward councillor for the town centre Paul Kirton told how he is keen to see a more sophisticated atmosphere develop in the town centre.

"What I've been trying to do for years, is change the culture from drinking, to a more relaxed, outside dining experience," he said.

Mr and Mrs Paleschi plan to erect a two-metre high perimeter wall around the premises, to create a safe, enclosed space for people to sit outside with a drink or snacks.

The plan also calls for internal alterations to the Wobbly Goblin, which will keeps its name.

Mrs Paleschi said: "We only open limited hours as a pub at the moment, and what we would like to do is attract people during the day, with coffee and snack facilities.

"There are plenty of offices nearby where workers would benefit from an outdoor area to enjoy their breaks."

The proposals would mean more staff to cater for a variety of customers, during the day and evening.

Members of the public can view and comment on the proposals at www.stockton.gov.uk, or by contacting the council on 01642-393939.

The closing date to comment is Wednesday, April 25, when a date will be set for the plans be discussed at the council's planning committee.
