A HORRIFIC attack on pigeons has once again highlighted the North-East's reputation as the animal cruelty capital of the country.

Dozens of birds were decapitated and others were fatally wounded by Middlesbrough yobs using garden tools as weapons.

One nesting bird had its head removed before the killers placed the body back on top of its young.

The handle of a garden trowel used to dismember one bird has been taken away for testing by scenes of crime officers with Cleveland Police.

Six pensioners were left in tears after their prize-winning pigeons were tortured at the lofts. The birds are thought to be valued at more than £10,000.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said officers chased at least two youths from the scene, off Skippers Lane, at 8.15pm on Saturday.

Arthur Earl, who has raced pigeons for more than 50 years, told how close friend David Jones broke down in tears when he heard the news.

Mr Earl, 70, said it was the latest in a spate of seven attacks on the lofts in the past 12 months.

He said: "That's it, I'm packing in. I'm too sickened to carry on with the birds. We can't keep replacing them every time they break in. It's a very expensive business."

He said his prize bird was valued at more than £500. But now nursing broken wings, the bird is worthless.

Police crime scene assessor PC Andy Himsworth said: "There were dead birds, blood and feathers everywhere, it was horrific.

"Whoever did this will have turned up at home covered in blood and feathers."

About 50 birds are believed to have been killed, with dozens still missing.

Anyone with information on the attacks is asked to call DC Mick Pain on 01642-326326.

The incident on Saturday evening is one of many attacks on animals in the region. Last month, RSPCA wardens discovered a dead swan with a gunshot wound to the head. Residents in Stillington, near Stockton, reported seeing youths taking shots at the animal with an air rifle.
