The A19 has now fully reopened after four separate accidents in thick fog forced the closure of the dual carriageway in both directions this morning.
The A19 was closed following acc idents between between A182 Hall Walks / B1283 Hall Walks (Easington) and A181 / B1281 (Castle Eden) at about 1.30am.
Durham Police said there had been one serious collision and three minor collisions. One man has been taken to hospital with leg injuries. No further injuries were reported.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service sent several appliances to the scene.
A spokesman for the firebrigade said: “We received a report of a collision between a car and a lorry on the southbound carriageway between Easington and Peterlee at about 10.35am.
“Appliances from Peterlee and Seaham, as well as the specialist rescue unit from Bishop Auckland attended the scene.
“One man was extricated and taken to hospital with severe leg injuries.”
The spokesman added: “We received a report of a further accident on the northbound carriageway. Appliances from Spennymoor, Newton Aycliffe and Wheatley Hill.
“One person was extricated”.
The northbound carriageway reopened at about 1pm while the southbound carriageway reopened at about 2.30pm.
