POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a married couple were killed in a road traffic collision on the A66 in County Durham yesterday afternoon.
The collision, between a white Citroen DS5 and a yellow SEAT Ibiza, happened on the westbound carriageway near Bowes Cross Farm at 3.50pm.
Police have confirmed the two people in the Ibiza were a man, 78, and wife, 71, from Lanarkshire, in Scotland, and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Another 61-year-old man from Doncaster was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.
Several units from all three emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed in both directions as officers investigated what happened and take statements from several witnesses.

Sergeant Andy Sutherland from the road policing unit said: “I am keen to hear from anyone in the area at the time who witnessed the collision or either of the vehicles in the time leading up to the collision.
"A couple have tragically lost their lives and any information could be vital in helping my team piece together what happened.”
