AWARD-WINNING photographs taken in the aftermath of one of the world’s worst industrial disasters have gone on display in the region.
Raghu Rai’s images of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, which claimed thousands of lives in shanty towns located near the Indian pesticide plant, will be on show at Durham Town Hall until Wednesday, April 22.
Exhibition organiser Melanie Hadida, from The Bhopal Medical Appeal, said: “The photos are striking and compelling and tell a powerful story about the strength and resilience of survivors in the face of immense governmental and corporate injustice.
“December 2014 marked the 30th anniversary of the gas disaster and also marked 30 years of injustice for Bhopal survivors, affected by the impacts of the gas disaster and subsequent water contamination crisis.
“It is our hope that by having these photos displayed in Durham Town Hall we will bring awareness towards the ongoing struggle of Bhopalis.”
The exhibition is in three sections: That Night, Second Disaster and Ongoing Struggle.
It will be open daily from 9am to 5pm. Entry is free. For more information, visit bhopal.org
