YOUNGSTERS branched out yesterday to help transform their school.

The pupils at Bankfields Primary School, in Eston, near Middlesbrough, took part in a tree-planting exercise as part of a Green Streets project.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is co-ordinating a tree-planting environmental improvement plan to create an attractive green space for the area as part of the Government's Cleaner Safer Greener agenda.

The council's area management department, along with Groundwork South Tees, The Tees Forest, and Coast and Country Housing, is planting 93 standard deciduous trees - a mixture of lime, hornbeam, whitebeam, cherry, maple, silver birch and rowan.

Part of the Green Streets project was meeting a request from Bankfields headteacher Sally Hirst for planting in the school grounds.

Ms Hirst said: "We have some lovely mature trees at the front of the school site, which look beautiful and provide shade for the children in sunny weather, but none to the rear, so we were delighted when we found out we could be in this scheme."
