LOTTERY funding may be sought to help pay for the redevelopment of a public library.

A feasibility report for North Yorkshire County Council has identified the costs involved in two options for revamping Harrogate library, which operates from a grade II-listed building.

On Tuesday, the council will be recommended to approve an option costing £3.1m and to apply to the Big Lottery Fund for £1.5m.

The proposal envisages a small extension, an improved IT area, a refurbished and expanded children's section, more accessible toilets and a passenger lift to all levels, with a cafe on the first floor and a larger local history and exhibition area.

Derek Law, the director of adult and community services, said: "The changes proposed will provide an improved working environment for staff and, should the Lottery bid be successful, it is likely that opening hours will be extended. Overall agreement has already been reached through negotiation with staff."

He said the county's libraries that have been upgraded have shown a rise in business of 20 to 40 per cent.

He said: "The Big Lottery Fund offers North Yorkshire an excellent opportunity to develop, in partnership with local communities, a truly innovative library facility at Harrogate."
