A PENSIONER who picks up rubbish every day in a popular park was among a host of community stalwarts praised for their efforts last night.

The unsung volunteers across Redcar and Cleveland were honoured at the annual Mayor's Community Achievement Awards. At the reception, Mayor Councillor Mary Ovens praised the work of 15 individuals and groups nominated in recognition of their voluntary work.

Coun Ovens said: "The work these people do is simply fantastic, and I'm delighted to be able to officially give them the recognition they deserve."

Among the nominations was 77-year-old George Rowden, who, every day for the past four years visited Redcar's Zetland Park to clean up the litter.

Brotton Village Hall Committee was praised for its community efforts.

Just over two years ago, the group of about 12 volunteers launched a campaign to reopen the village hall. They have improved the hall by refurbishing the toilets and kitchen, as well as fundraising to keep the community hall from closing.

Treasurer Ted McNickolls said: "Obviously we are very pleased the work has been recognised. We have done a lot of work and managed to secure around £70,000 in grants.

"The previous committee shut the doors and closed the hall.

"We got together and made a public protest and managed to get it reopened and completely refurbished.
