US singing sensations The Drifters will make their first visit to Hartlepool later this month.

With 52 years behind them, they are the longest-running pop group in history, and will appear at the Town Hall Theatre next Saturday.

They will be performing the classic tracks which have earned them more than 50 worldwide hits, including Under The Boardwalk, Save The Last Dance For Me, Saturday Night At The Movies and There Goes My Baby.

The Drifters were formed in New York in 1953, and the name has proved appropriate, as many of the group's members have drifted in and out during the half century.

For the past 30 years, they have toured the UK and Europe extensively.

And although some original members are gone, the sound continues with the current line-up of Gilly Lee-Roy Jones, Jimmy Hamilton, Jazz Cherry and Lewis J Jackson.

Claire Munroe, of Hartlepool Borough Council's arts, museums and events service, said: "They're often imitated, but you can never equal the truly fabulous Drifters."

The show starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £15, or £14 for concessions. For details, call the box office on 01429-890000.
