A WORKERS' co-operative run by and for people with disabilities threw open its doors to the public yesterday.

Endeavour Woodcrafts, in Ferryhill, showed visitors the range of hand-crafted items it makes and sells - from bird tables and planters to dolls houses.

Members of the co-operative have all overcome learning disabilities. Not only do they make products, but sell them from its workshop and at fairs, manage the company and arrange events.

When Endeavour Woodcrafts was established in 1992, members joined from local adult training centres and clubs. Most members are now introduced on work placements by Durham County Council.

Support worker and member Liz Hill said: "We don't want people to buy our products out of sympathy, but because they are good quality. That is why we held the open day - to show people what we are about and how good and varied our products are."
