A SCHEME to ensure that people with disabilities are not discriminated against has been launched by Hartlepool Borough Council.

A council statement says: "The council aims to tackle disability discrimination in a practical way. It is committed to developing policies that actively promote opportunities, and so prevent discrimination taking place.

"People with disabilities and groups representing people with disabilities, including current and potential service users, staff and the wider community, were involved in developing the scheme."

Councillor Peter Jackson, cabinet member for performance management, said: "This is a very comprehensive scheme which goes further than the Government legislates. It is supported by an action plan which will be monitored and updated on a regular basis."

Vijaya Kotur, the council's diversity officer, said: "It is very important that people with disabilities are not discriminated against, and this scheme ensures that the council has all the necessary measures in place to provide equality across the board.

"We would, however, like further comments on the scheme, because it will continue to evolve over time."

The disability equality scheme is an addendum to the race and diversity scheme 2005-2008.
