AFTER a great weekend's fencing in the British Youth Championships Epee and Sabre Finals in Stoke on Trent, more fencing medals came to the North-East to double the tally already gained by fencers from the
Region in the British Youth Championships Foil finals held in January.
Jade Clark, age 16, from Trimdon, who has already been selected to
represent Great Britain in at the forthcoming Cadet World Epee
Championships, brought home the Silver medal in the Under-18s Girls category and also gained a creditable 9th place in the Under-18s Girls Sabre as the only North-East entrant competing in both weapons. Emma Reid from Durham whose season has been affected by injury still managed to take a bronze medal in the Under-16s Girls Sabre, and Lucy Ridsdale from Durham was also in the medal placings with bronze for third place in the Under-16s Girls epee. These results brought the Northeast 2007 medal haul over both weekends to two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Other finalists from North East Regional Qualifying competition who made last 32 or above in the national finals in their age categories
were: Mitchell Jones 9th U16 Boys Sabre, Ryan Brown 11th U16 Boys Sabre, Stuart Scott 13th U14 Boys Sabre, Matt Henderson 15th U16 Boys Epee, William Webb 16th U12 Boys Sabre, Chris Urwin 17th U16 Boys Sabre, Sophie Ridsdale 18th U18 Girls Epee, Matthew Tomlinson 19th U18 Boys Sabre, Natalie Smyth 19th U16 Girls Epee, Ana Bonnington 21st U16 Girls Epee, Gabriella Smyth 22nd U14 Girls Epee.
In junior foil Sam Ridley's good season continued with the Under-13s fencer from Wolsingham winning a silver medal at the Sherwood Leon Paul Junior Series event in Nottingham.
