VISITORS can get a look behind the scenes at the technical side of the NHS with a series of open days this week.

As part of the national Healthcare Science Week, which starts tomorrow (Monday, March 16), public open days are being held in the medical physics departments at the University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Medical physics and clinical engineering delivers and contributes to diagnostic imaging, such as x-rays, ultrasounds and MRI scanners, radiation safety, radiotherapy and clinical and rehabilitation engineering.

As much as five per cent of the NHS workforce is involved in medical physics.

Dr Alison Mackie, consultant medical physicist and clinical director of medical physics for County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, said, "Healthcare Science Week is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness and interest people in the work of the healthcare science community and the regional medical physics team in particular and the vital role we play in patient care, diagnosis and treatment."

The medical physics department at UHND will be open tomorrow (Monday) from 2.15pm to 3.45pm, and on Wednesday (March 18) from 10.30am to noon and 3.45pm to 4.45pm.

At Darlington Memorial Hospital, the medical physics department is open on Tuesday (March 17) from noon to 1pm, and on Thursday (March 19) from 4pm to 5pm.
