ARTWORKS from pupils at 12 Catholic schools are to be exhibited in a cathedral.

A dozen schools in the Hexham and Newcastle Catholic Partnership are exhibiting art work on a theme of “Awe And Wonder” at the Galilee Chapel in Durham Cathedral.

The exhibition, being staged for the sixth year running, features schools from as far afield as North Shields and Darlington.

Pupils from St Leonard’s School, in Durham, visited the cathedral on Monday (January 19) to view their creations.

More than 200 young artists have spent the last few months creating exciting artwork showing their skill in various artistic media.

The exhibition will explore the theology at the heart of the schools' ethos and show how young artists navigate and express curiosity and splendour in the world around them

Sara Crawshaw, director of the Catholic Partnership, said: "It is an absolute privilege to be exhibiting at Durham Cathedral for a sixth year running.

“Our entire community looks forward to this annual event and are always thrilled by the excellent standard of work and diverse interpretations of the theme.

“Many congratulations to all the talented artists who are exhibiting this year and many thanks to the dedicated art staff who have enabled this ambitious project.

“Awe and Wonder promises to be our most exciting exhibition yet.”

Durham Cathedral, the location of the exhibition, is often referred to as the best example of Romanesque architecture in Europe, or as American writer Bill Bryson put it, ‘the best Cathedral on planet earth.’

The exhibition will be on display in the Galilee Chapel from until Thursday, February 12.
