A MAN suffered a head injury and a pub and car were damaged when trouble flared following Sunderland’s FA Cup victory over Leeds United.
Police were called to reports of a fight between Sunderland and Leeds fans outside the Wheatsheaf pub in Roker Avenue, Monkwearmouth, less than an hour after the game yesterday (Sunday, January 4).
A window of the bar was smashed after a bottle was thrown from outside and a taxi parked in nearby Monk Street, was damaged.
A 42-year-old Sunderland man was hurt in the fracas after the Black Cats’ 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “This was an isolated incident in what was an otherwise trouble-free day.”
Benjamin Haigh, 32, from Station Road, Huddersfield, has been charged with criminal damage and causing fear or provocation of violence.
He will appear before Sunderland magistrates on Tuesday, February 3.
