THE winner of a police safety competition has been announced.
A total of 115 stuffed bears were hidden in shop windows around Durham City during July and August, as part of the Safe City initiative and children were challenged to find as many as possible.
Today (Wednesday, September 3), the police announced the child who spotted the most was Grace Corner, aged six, of Durham Gilesgate Primary School, Durham City.
She won a £25 gift voucher, which she chose to spend at Superdrug.
The runners-up were siblings Abigail, seven, and one-year-old Tommy Hodgson, of South Stanley Primary School.
The hidden bears were each dressed in one of four coloured sashes, each of which carried a safety message: red for ‘say no to strangers’; yellow for ‘keep it hidden, keep it safe’; green for ‘keep Durham City tidy’; and blue for ‘stay safe around rivers and ponds’.
The winner of the best dressed bear was the Art Shop and Kemble Gallery, on Saddler Street, where staff dressed their bear as an artist.
