Two people were injured in a collision involving two vehicles on Neasham Road, Hurworth - near to the Darlington Arena.
A man had to be cut free by firefighters before he was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, by the Great North Air Ambulance.
A woman was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital by road ambulance.
Two fire crews and a special rescue unity responded at 4.25pm this afternoon. The road was closed to allow recovery of the vehicles and an investigation into the collision.
