VOLUNTEERS are turning an overgrown wilderness into a community nature park.

Around 15 people have joined the Friends of Millennium Green group with the aim of improving the park in Tow Law.

Work has already begun to create a wildflower meadow and turn an overgrown pond into a family area.

The project has received £2,645 from Durham County councillor for Tow Law John Hart.

He said: "What makes Tow Law great is that so many people give up their time for the good of their community.

"The Friends of Millennium Green are an extraordinary group who are doing a great job on the loveliest area of North East Durham if not the whole county."

The project is also being supported by Tow Law Town Council, Northumbrian Water and Durham Wildlife Trust.

Lead volunteer Michelle Hird, who has been helpd by sons Sonny and Billy Laing, said: "The aim is to get the community involved in creating and preserving this area for families to enjoy."

The town council is also progressing plans to create a new play area at the green.
