GEORDIE heroes have been honoured in a walk of fame created on the banks of the Tyne.

Plaques dedicated to 20 inspiring people chosen by the public have been installed on the Quayside.

The trail was opened today (Monday March 24) by Lady Elsie Robson, whose late husband Sir Bobby Robson is one of those featured.

She said: “I am proud that Bob has been honoured as part of NewcastleGateshead Local Heroes.

“To have his achievements, both in football and through the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, commemorated and remembered in this way is wonderful.

“That he was nominated by the public for the honour is even more touching.”

Others given a plaque are musician Kathryn Tickell, Sting, Ant and Dec, Brendan Foster, Alan Shearer, Robson Green, Barbour clothing founder Dame Margaret Barbour, Paralympian Stephen Miller, the late Cardinal Basil Hume, Professor of Clinical Genetics Sir John Burn, photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen; children’s author, David Almond, Newcastle pop legends Lindisfarne, comedy writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, writer the late Julia Darling, community champion Doreen Jardine from Blakelaw, [pitman turned author and campaigner the late Alderman Edward Cowen, Gateshead Methodist Missionary the late Sister Winifred Laver, and Nobel Prize for Physics winner Prof Peter Higgs.

Behind the scheme are Newcastle and Gateshead councils and the NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which promotes tourism.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive of the NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “NewcastleGateshead Local heroes received more than 300 nominations in its first year – an overwhelming endorsement of some truly inspirational individuals.”

More plaques will be installed in the future.
