AN AFGHANISTAN veteran hopes to set a new record for the world’s fastest marathon carrying a 60lb pack, all in memory of a fallen comrade.

Jamie Peace’s brother in arms Elijah Bond was killed after being hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand province in December 2011.

Sapper Bond, of Megavissey, Cornwall, was 24 and part of 35 Engineer Regiment.

Mr Peace now hopes to run the London Marathon in his memory to raise £2,000 for The Army Benevolent Fund and beat the current world record for a marathon carrying a 60lb pack – four hours, 39 minutes and nine seconds.

The 24-year-old, who lives near Durham, ran the 2010 London Marathon carrying a 40lb pack and completed last year’s Great North Run carrying 44lbs in two hours and two minutes.

Mr Peace spent four years in the Royal Engineers, including six months in Afghanistan, before leaving the Army in September 2012. He is now a personal trainer at David Lloyds, Teesside.

This year’s London Marathon, the world’s biggest road race, takes place on Sunday, April 13.
