STUDENTS and academics from the North-East will learn more about the opportunities available at Sunderland when the city’s university hosts the first RISE festival later this month.

The International Centre for Research in Innovation, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship (RISE) will hold its first festival of research at the University of Sunderland from March 28 to April 3. RISE will highlight the extensive research within the University’s Faculty of Business and Law, including Marketing, Enterprise, Law, Tourism, Leadership and Professional Practice.

The event, organised by Events students at the University, will cover topics as diverse as pop festivals, entrepreneurship, and space law.

RISE 2014 will open with ‘Research Active Curriculum: The Future’ on March 28 when Professor Julie Mennell, Professor Bernie Callaghan, Professor Gail Sanders and Ron Lawson will look at how the University has linked research and teaching.

The RISE Research Festival will hold three main events: ‘The events Industry in the North East: Opportunities and Challenges’, The Pod, National Glass Centre, Monday March 31, 1.30pm-4pm.

Key players in the tourism sector to discuss the present and future of Sunderland’s events industry, including Pau Obrador, Tourism Cluster Leader at the University of Sunderland; Chris Alexander, Sunderland Live; Frankie Francis, Frankie and the Heartstrings; and Sharon Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Events.

‘Innovation and Growth- Some evidence from North-East England’, Room 412, Reg Vardy Centre, Wednesday April 2, 10am to 11.30am.

Dr. Hamid Seddighi, leader of the Enterprise Research Cluster at the University, will discuss his work in this sector since 1996, with special reference to the North East of England.

‘From Space Race to Gold Rush: Contemporary Themes in Space Law’, Room 405, Reg Vardy Centre, Wednesday, April 2, 11.30am to 12.30pm.

Dr Christopher J. Newman will explain the emergence of Space Law, focusing on the themes of innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

Dr Newman will discuss what the study and research of Space Law entails, and look at the challenges and opportunities that arise from a new epoch in space exploration. Christopher Newman is one of the UK’s leading experts in Space Law, and will show how getting involved in the space industry is no longer the exclusive preserve of super power nation states.

The 2014 RISE Research Festival will close with a final celebration at National Glass Centre on Thursday, April 3, from 6pm-9pm, with live music, a research exhibition and guest speaker Edward Twiddy, Executive of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.
