A HUNT has been launched for a convicted arsonist who disappeared after being given early release from prison.

North Yorkshire Police believe Ian Marjoram, who was sentenced to four years and three months in jail for arson to recklessly endangering lives, could be in the Harrogate or Middlesbrough areas.

Chief Inspector Ian Thompson said while he does not believe Marjoram, who set fire to a flat on East Parade, Harrogate, and burgled a cafe in the town in 2011, poses a specific danger to the public, he urged residents not to approach him.

The Probation Service alerted police on Monday (September 30) after Marjoram failed to return to his address in York.

Chf Insp Thompson said Marjoram had probably been in Harrogate since leaving York, but there was a possibility he may have headed to the Middlesbrough area, where he has family connections.

This, together with failing to reside at his address in York, breached his prison release licence.

Marjoram is described as white, 5ft 10in tall, with dark brown hair, of medium build and has blue eyes.

Chf Insp Thompson has issued an appeal directly to Marjoram and anyone who might be helping him to avoid arrest.

He said: “Ian, you know you are in the wrong. It is now time to do the right thing and hand yourself in to the police.

"I am also strongly advising people not to assist him as this is an offence and we will take robust action.”
