AN RSPCA cattery is offering to microchip pets for free.
Felledge Cattery, near Chester-le-Street, is celebrating its recent opening by offering an effective way to permanently link cats and dogs to their owners.
Cattery manager Maggie Eden said: "It's so important to have your pet microchipped.
"It's heartbreaking when pets go missing, but the chances of them being reunited with their owners is greatly increased if they have a microchip."
Microchipping pets involves placing a tiny chip, the size of a grain of rice, under the animal's skin.
Once microchipped, the animal will have a unique code number, and the owner's details and the code are put on to the national PetLog. This allows any lost or stolen animal to be more easily re-united with their owner.
Felledge Cattery opened on December 4 and provides homes for 60 cats.
It has four isolation units for sick or very young cats before they are ready for adoption.
The cattery will offer its microchip service from 3pm to 4pm tomorrow.
