AN ARTIST from the region is taking his exhibition to London to help celebrate the anniversary of the London 2012 Paralympics.

Simon McKeown is showing his work at the Liberty Festival in London, an event to mark ten years of National Paralympic Day, and a year since the London Games.

His work, Motion Disabled Limited, is a digital installation which uses animation to show how disabled athletes move. It is based on Mat Fraser, an actor, rock musician, athlete and performer.

Mr McKeown, who is also disabled, is an academic in post-production and animation at the University of Teesside. He was born with osteogenesis imperfect, a condition causing extremely fragile bones.

He said: “I’ve probably broken over 100 bones, but my condition has made me what I am. It has made me artistic and patient and I have grown and developed what I do because of this.

“'People are often embarrassed to look at people with disabilities and there is still a cultural taboo around disability which is a big issue in the UK.”
