A cyclist suffered serious injuries when he hit an overhead cable that had come lose and swung into the road.

The 23-year-old man was cycling on Kibblesworth Bank, near to the junction with the Grange estate, Gateshead, when he collided with the cable.

Police believe it had come lose from its mountings and dropped into his path.

The collision caused the rider to fall from his bike and sustain serious injuries.

He is currently in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle receiving treatment for serious facial and head injuries and is in a stable condition.

The accident happened at 11:20am on Saturday, August 17.

It is believed that a large vehicle may have caught the electric cable causing it to come loose and swing into the road.

Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, or anyone with any information, to come forward and speak to police on 101 ext 69191.
