A POLICE operation to catch cyclists and motorists who break the law has resulted in nearly £10,000 worth of fines being issued.
Operation Causeway was launched by North Yorkshire Police in York in October to tackle cyclists riding on footpaths or at night without lights, and drivers who used hands-free phones while driving, failed to wear seatbelts or use the correct child restraints.
Throughout October, the public were warned of these dangers and were given notice that the police would address this behaviour.
A policy of prosecution began last month. So far, 516 verbal warnings have been given and 322 fixed penalty tickets have been issued, totalling £9,660 in fines.
Inspector Richard Abbott said: "I am very disappointed by the public's response to this crucial safety campaign.
"We have invested much time and effort in the education phase of the operation, working closely with the councils, in an attempt to bring home the safety message. Unfortunately, people continue to offend.
"I am stunned that people continue to use their phones whilst driving. A hands-free kit is as cheap as £20 -a fine is £30. I also fail to see how parents allow their children to go out on their bikes at night without lights. It is so dangerous."
The campaign will continue throughout the area into the new year.
