PLANS for a long-awaited 20mph limit outside a village school have been delayed by new Government rules.

Brompton Town Council, near Northallerton, said that despite years of campaigning, there is still no sign of the limit being introduced by North Yorkshire County Council outside the primary school in Station Road.

It told the county council it understood last year that the scheme was second on a priority list and would move to the top by March this year, with work to be carried out before the end of this financial year, unless another scheme took precedence because of accident figures.

The town council said it now appeared the scheme was not on the current or reserve work lists.

Eddy Hayward, the county council's Hambleton area manager, said that until April last year, the system of drawing up priorities for 20mph limits was based only on accident figures.

Following new Government instructions, highway authorities now have to consider other factors, including accessibility, safety and the environment.

Mr Hayward assured Brompton that its scheme was still on a reserve list. Because of the changes, he could not say when it was likely to be implemented, but it will be discussed in the spring.
