Three youngsters are helping to spread festive cheer around a town centre.

Chloe Tweddall, Chloe Warburton and Zoe Ball each designed a decoration to include in Spennymoor's Christmas lights.

Last week, they saw their ideas up in lights as the town's Christmas display was switched on.

The event also marked the opening of Santa's grotto in the town hall. Schools can visit on weekdays and the public are welcome on Saturdays, from 10am to noon, until December 16.

Spennymoor Town Council spent about £15,000 on the Christmas lights this year to try to make the town centre more attractive to visitors.

The council is supporting The Northern Echo's Shopping For A Future campaign which aims to encourage people in the Spennymoor area to support their town centre and to tackle problems facing local traders.

Council leader John Marr said: "We fully back the campaign to promote and support our town. We need people who come here for the supermarkets, to work or use leisure facilities to see what else is here and support those businesses."
