A NEW building on a historical site has been named a winner in competition praising good design.

The Helmsley Castle Visitor Centre was a winner in the Ryedale District Council Good Design and Construction Awards 2006.

The awards recognise the efforts of building owners, architects and builders.

The Helmsley centre was designed by the Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams architects and developer Tom Willoughby used stone, slate and glass in the building, which is framed by the castle ruins.

Also a winner was the four houses called The Cave, in Middlecave Road, Malton, which were ordered by local developer Zoe Plummer and built using natural materials.

The design was by Bramhall Blenkharn Architects, of Malton, and includes a stair tower to higher floors.

"The standard of entries for the 2006 Good Design and Construction Awards has been fantastic - so good in fact that we had two overall winners," said Councillor Pamela Anderson chairman of Ryedale District Council.

"The projects embody all of the qualities that we look for in our design awards, in terms of design and workmanship and is a credit to all concerned."
