A RE-FORMED school choir are hitting all the right notes as they prepare for a series of seasonal performances.

Pupils and teachers at The King's Academy, Coulby Newham, are tuning up for a string of Christmas recitals under newly-appointed head of music Andrew Maycock.

"I took over as head of music at the academy in September, and decided to resurrect the choir," said Mr Maycock. "We now have about 14 members and it's growing."

The choir's first performance will be at Coulby Newham Cathedral, on Friday, as part of the Butterwick Hospice Christmas Concert.

"We're learning eight pieces in total, all descant parts for carols," said Mr Maycock.

Pupil Sophie Young, 12, of Yearby, has been limbering up her vocal chords after being chosen to perform a solo in the cathedral.

"I'll be singing Walking in the Air, from The Snowman," said Sophie. "I'm really looking forward to it, I love singing and our choir is really good."

A second performance, on December 14, will see pupil Lana Walker, 13, of Redcar, performing a solo rendition of O' Holy Night at the annual academy carol concert.

Mr Maycock said: "There is a lot of talent in our choir and a range of abilities, from beginners to seasoned singers. But we're still looking for new singers to swell our ranks for a number of concerts in the pipeline for next year."
