RESIDENTS of a market town are to be consulted on plans to build a multi-million pound supermarket on their doorstep.

Tesco superstore this week submitted a full planning application to build a 30,000sq ft store in Spring Wood Road, Guisborough.

If Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's planning committee approves the scheme, the development could be completed by Christmas next year.

Tesco representatives are to hold a public consultation today, from 4pm to 8pm, at Sunnyfield House, Guisborough, where they will present the scheme to the community.

Some residents fear the development could take trade away from the town.

Members of the Guisborough Business Association are to hold a meeting on Wednesday, December 6, to discuss the plans. Iit is believed the group will oppose the development.

Max Curtis, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: "We are very excited about opening a store in Guisborough. It will be a first for a Tesco store to operate in the town.

"Local people told us that they struggle to get items like clothes, TVs and cameras in Guisborough.

"By majoring on products other than food, our new store will get more people choosing Guisborough to do their shopping."
