THE cream of a college's students and staff were rewarded for their efforts last night.
Darlington College's annual awards ceremony celebrated outstanding contributions to education and study and recognised the achievements and obstacles overcome in vocational and academic life.
Almost 1,000 guests from Darlington, County Durham, North Yorkshire and Teesside attended the event, held for the fifth year at the Civic Theatre.
Awards were presented for staff and student achievements and long service by a number of dignitaries, including chief executive of Darlington Football Club John Sotnick, Darlington Borough Council chief executive Ada Burns, College principal and chief executive and principal Sarah Robinson, chairman of the college board Alasdair MacConachie and Malcolm Warne, editor of The Darlington and Stockton Times.
Sponsored by Shepherd Construction, the evening was compered by BBC radio presenter Matthew Davies and the college's executive director for customer relations, Sue Campbell.
Mrs Campbell said: "This is the first award ceremony since the college moved to its new £35m site which required a massive team effort.
"We have thousands of students at the college and to be nominated for an award is a great achievement of which you can be very proud."
Mr Davies added: "The college has had plenty to celebrate over the past year and I'm sure plenty to look forward to over the next."
An evening of entertainment featured a catwalk spectacular of students' fashion and creative hair designs.
Students Allan Carter and James Stephenson also entertained the crowds with a classical guitar performance.
The audience were treated to a video which paid a fond farewell to the Cleveland Avenue campus and celebrated the successful move in September to the £35m learning park in Haughton Road.
For the first time, two new trophies were presented to construction students in memory of developer Bob Carnell, a long-time friend of the college.
Principal Ms Robinson said: "We have so many great and committed staff it is extremely hard to single them out for awards.
"Our results have been excellent over the past year, which is testament to our staff, particularly at a time when we were moving house."
