A COUNCIL'S bid to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions has won Government praise.

Easington District Council is formulating an action plan to help with the global problem and has signed the Local Authority Declaration on Climate Change.

Its proposed Local Climate Change Action Plan is designed to co-ordinate all relevant activities and provide guidance for residents and businesses, advising them on day-to-day actions which will help reduce harmful emissions.

Minister for Climate Change Ian Pearson, who recently visited the, area has backed Easington's efforts.

"I am very impressed with the Easington climate change community strategy and am happy to offer my support to its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Taking local actions to tackle this global problem is essential."

Cliff Duff, energy manager for Easington council, said: "We are very pleased that the minister has chosen to endorse and support the development of a climate change strategy for Easington.

"By using its positive influence to highlight the benefits of saving energy, we aim to work in partnership with local communities and businesses to reduce gas emissions.''
