RECORD numbers entered a popular relay race in County Durham last week.

The Neptune Relays saw 101 teams compete in the four-stage race around the picturesque grounds of Hardwick Park, near Sedgefield.

Many athletes who took part had represented Great Britain and the high calibre of competitors made for an exciting contest.

In the end it was the A team from Morpeth Harriers that secured victory in the men’s race, with Lewis Timmins, Mick Thompson, Nick Swinburn and Phil Walker completing the relay in just 32 minutes and 52 seconds.

Mr Timmins had further cause to celebrate, completing his 1.7-mile lap in a record seven minutes and 45 seconds.

In the women’s contest, Durham City Harriers took first place after Rebecca Mott, Aysha Hall, Courtney Price and Chloe Price completed the race in 42 minutes and eight seconds.

Chloe price also achieved a course record for her nine minute and three second lap.

The junior race proved just exciting, with 50 mini and junior harriers competing in a one mile handicap race.

This time host club Sedgefield Harriers proved triumphant.

“It was a fantastic event that runners seem to enjoy a lot,” said Ean Parsons of Sedgefield Harriers.

“It was made possible by a great bunch of volunteers from Sedgefield Harriers and the wider community, and of course the team at Hardwick Park.”
