FILM fans will get a rare chance to see a new cut of a cult horror epic as part of Darlington Arts Festival next week.

Darlington Film Club, which holds weekly film shows at the town's Forum Music Centre, has organised a screening of Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut.

The film, based on a book by Hellraiser author Clive Barker, has long been thought to be a lost classic.

It was only ever released in a truncated version which made no sense after the distributor re-cut the negative.

The Northern Echo:

Over the years Nightbreed has become the stuff of horror legend and many fans had given up hope of ever seeing it.

Incredibly, a VHS tape of the unexpurgated film sat undiscovered on a shelf in Clive Barker's office until it was discovered almost by accident a couple of years ago.

Using the original script, filmaker Russell Cherrington painstakingly reconstructed the full Nightbreed by splicing the restored VHS footage into the existing film.

As well as the giving the new version its regional premiere, film club organisers have lined up a question and answer session with Mr Cherrington and two of the stars, Simon Bamford and Nicholas Vince.

James Watson, who organised the screening, said: “This is a unique opportunity to see Nightbreed in its entirety and meet the people who made it possible.”

Tickets for the show, which starts at 8pm on Wednesday (May 8), cost £6. For more details contact 01325-363135.
