A SCHEME to tackle offensive language in non league football has proved to be a winner after it struck gold in the FA’s Respect Awards.

The Ebac Northern League’s Secret Shopper scheme began this season to tackle swearing at matches.

Volunteers anonymously attended matches to observe the behavior of players, team management and spectators.

Since the campaign began more than two-thirds of clubs have significantly improved their average mark.

The scheme beat 470 nominations to win the gold FA Respect Award. The trophy, and a £3,000 cash prize, will be presented at the FA Cup Final on May 11.

League chairman Mike Amos said: “It has focused national attention on the issue of offensive language in grassroots football, the results have been greatly encouraging.

“None of the secret shoppers is paid, many don’t even ask for expenses, some even pay to get in.

“Armed with their feedback we have been able to have constructive, usually amicable, dialogue with the clubs and individuals where there’s most concern.

“We want the Northern League to be a place where families and children feel comfortable. We’d be foolish to be complacent, but this award encourages us to maintain our efforts.”

John Elliott, chairman of Ebac, the league’s sponsor, dreamt up the scheme and eighteen volunteers were recruited to attend matches.

Dermot Collins, the FA’s Respect programme manager, said: “The award is in recognition of creating an environment in which our beautiful game can thrive.”

Hebburn Town Juniors Football Club, whose parent club is in the Northern League, won the Grassroots Club gold FA Respect Award.

The Stockton Sunday League is to collect the FA Respect Award Grassroots Adult League award.
