SCHOOL children are exploring the history behind Durham street names.

Pupils at Durham Gilesgate Primary School were the first to take part in the Down Our Street project.

They took part in after-school workshops and visited the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Museum, learning about DLI soldiers who were awarded the Victoria Cross, including Richard Annand and Roland Bradford – both of whom have leant their surnames to Gilesgate streets.

Their work has led to an exhibition, which is on display now at the DLI Museum, and until Sunday, June 9.

Project co-ordinator John Castling said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be concluding Down Our Street with an exhibition which shows just how much the children have accomplished.

“Not only have they uncovered these wonderful stories, but they’ve also presented them in a creative way at a fantastic exhibition which invites their local Gilesgate community to come and share their joint heritage. We can’t wait to say the response.”

The project is backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s All Our Stories programme and run by Off The Page Drama.

Off The Page director Christina Maiden said: “Ten schools in the area have received free learning packs with workshop plans, resources and creative ideas.

“I am excited that the exploration of local stories started with Durham Gilesgate Primary will continue in other schools and I look forward to seeing what they discover.”

The DLI Museum, in Aykley Heads, is currently open daily from 10am to 5pm. Entry costs £3.70 for adults, £2.70 for concessions, £1.70 for children aged four to 16 and £9.40 for families. For more information, call 03000-266-590.
