AN investigation into the cause of a fire at an old library building has confirmed that it was most likely set deliberately.

The blaze at Thorntree Library on Beresford Crescent, Middlesbrough, started at around 8.40pm on Monday (April 29) and raged for more than hour before firefighters brought it under control.

The suspected arsonists are being hunted after the fire burned through the roof and completely gutted the building.

Detective Constable Phil Dawson, of Middlesbrough CID, said: “We would like to appeal for any witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious or anyone acting suspiciously in the area to come forward and speak to police.

“A group of youths are believed to have been seen in the area around the time of the incident. Anyone who may have seen the youths is also asked to contact us.”

The library closed last year as part of Middlesbrough's cuts programme and was being demolished in order to be turned into extra care housing.

The scheme was due to provide much-needed accommodation, as well as care and support services.

The building was planned to include facilities available to the community, though details have yet to be confirmed.

No arrests have been made in connection with the fire and enquiries are ongoing at this stage.

Witnesses are asked to contact DC Phil Dawson at Middlesbrough CID on the non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
