THE industrial heritage of a Stockton company has been captured in a new book celebrating its distinctive place in the town’s history.

Life at Head’s: Memories of Working at Head Wrightson, which was officially launched today (Friday), also marks the demise of the factory site where former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher did her famous ‘Walk in the Wilderness’ in 1987 after it was demolition.

However, the book focuses on the more positive times with interviews with almost a hundred people who shared their memories of working for the company.

Margaret Williamson, a retired lecturer from Teesside University, has edited the book which is the third in a series called Teesside Industrial Memories Project (TIMP).

The book covers the founding of the company in 1866 until its merger with Davy in 1977 and its eventual closure in 1984.

The site is now home to Durham University’s Teesside Campus, office blocks, care homes and housing.

Copies of the book are available for £8.99 from Waterstones in Middlesbrough, Guisborough Bookshop and Preston Hall Museum.
