A PAIR of silk stockings belonging to Queen Victoria have failed to sell at auction.
The historical hosiery, dating from the 1870s, were embroidered with the royal VR monogram and appeared at auction at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn, North Yorkshire today (Friday, April 26).
The items had signs of wear and tear, but with such an illustrious, regal history they were expected to fetch between £400 and £600.
Two years ago, a similar pair of the monarch's stockings fetched nearly £700 at auction in Edinburgh.
But despite this, nobody bid for them during the textiles auction.
A spokeswoman for Tennants said they had received an offer on the stockings from someone after the auction and the offer may be accepted.
According to North Yorkshire social history author Dulcie Lewis, Queen Victoria would often give away her undergarments as presents to people who worked for her.
