A MAN who attacked his ex-girlfriend in a bar was today (Thursday, April 25) jailed for 15 months as a judge spoke of his "dark side in drink".

Jake Randall, 22, produced a raft of impressive references which told of a hard-working community volunteer and peer mentor.

But Teesside Crown Court heard how he also has a string of previous convictions for drunkenness and public disorder.

Randall, of Maldon Road, Middlesbrough, was found guilty after a trial of malicious wounding and an actual bodily harm assault.

His victim - a 21-year-old cosmetics consultant - had two front teeth chipped and a cut head after the attack last July.

The court heard that Randall reacted angrily when his ex spoke to his current girlfriend in the Absolute bar in Middlesbrough.

He smashed her in the face while holding a bottle then threw it at the back of her head, said Ian Mullarkey, prosecuting.

Rachel Dyson, mitigating, told the court that Randall was well thought-of in the community he lives and works.

Judge John Walford said: "I would be failing in my duty and sending quite the wrong signal if I was to do other than impose an immediate custodial sentence."
